CHAPTER 18

EB didn’t want to see anything else, especially another Christmas. As amusing as it was to be reminded of his childhood, those days were long gone, dead and buried. This had been a good lesson here at his old elementary, a lesson he’d take to heart to be more supportive of the younger generation, especially the ignorant ones still clinging to their immature dreams. After all, he was a champion of opportunity, employing tens of thousands of young men and women.

Yes, it was true he didn’t do anything to charitably help the children of his community and the world, but wasn’t that the job of the public school system, into which his sky-high state taxes were being poured? And if they weren’t in school, was he not also paying another array of taxes and fees for social services to manage the more needy kids? Maybe there would be a way to bring grade-schoolers into employment, use them to make his company more productive and profitable. Now that was something to think about! Certainly a core value to extract from each according to their ability. But such progressive thinking would have to wait. It was time to return to bed and get his much-needed rest so tomorrow he could tackle the truly important matters of his future with Narud.

Just as he was about to deny the spirit’s invitation and make his request to return home known to his host, the tall church sanctuary in which the tech titan and his mighty nuclear power plant of a host were standing began to shrink. All around him it began to compress downward, forcing the stained glass windows to be absorbed into pale white sterilized walls as if they were being sucked into a black hole. The steepled roof flattened out and then, as if a hydraulic press were pushing it down, it descended upon them. At the same time, the younger Ebenezer they had been watching grew larger, gained muscle mass, and developed sharper features—especially his eyes. Once full grown in size, a white coat swirled out of the commotion and covered him from his shoulders down to his shins.

The lighting also changed as the ceiling sprouted long, plastic-encased fluorescents. The windows through which EB had watched his childhood heroes evaporated, becoming whitewashed walls full of charts, diagrams, some shelves and a monitor here and there. Then the pulpit itself underwent a transformation, becoming a table, which then multiplied into table after table, with the pews turning into chairs and stools surrounding the newly birthed tables that filled the room. Last of all, the cross that had been at the front of the church behind the preacher’s podium was sucked into the same black whirlpool that took the colored windows and, in its place, an overly large, round, and very plain clock materialized. It’s second hand jaggedly jumped from dash to dash, with each jump bringing the ceiling a little further down toward them.

“Help, spirit!” EB yelled in panic as he covered
